Medication guide:

Sumycin is one of the brand names under which Tetracycline is marketed. It is included in World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines. The antibiotic family tetracyclines to which the medicine belongs was discovered in 1945 by Lederle Laboratories, an American pharmaceutical company. Tetracyclines then were not synthesized but found as natural products. The medicine was first used in 1948. Later, in 1950, the chemical formula for the creation and alteration of the medicine was found by Harvard University professor Robert Burns Woodward, who patented his method of fermentation and production of the substance.

Sumycin is a wide range antibiotic effective both against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. It is used to treat diseases caused by aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Currently, there are known only two types of bacteria resistant to Sumycin - Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus. The medicine can also become ineffective in previously effectively treated bacteria elimination due to acquired resistance. Inappropriate use or exceeding of the prescribed treatment course length may result in resistance developed in the treatment of neisseria gonorrhoeae, staphylococcus, streptococcus, and anaerobic bacteria.

Sumycin mechanism of action

Sumycin prevents complex formation between transfer RNA and ribosome leading to a suppression of protein synthesis in bacteria. It inhibits the plantation of new amino acids to the arising peptide chain. Sumycin and other tetracyclines are much less harmful for the body cells than to bacterial cells due to the fact that bacteria actively absorbs Sumycin into their cytoplasm while human or other mammals body cells do not do so.

Chemical properties of Sumycin

The formula of the medicine used for oral intake is C22H24N2O8.

Oral Suspension of Sumycin, beside the active substance, consists of inactive additives: purified water, sucrose, citric acid, flavor, colorant, potassium citrate, potassium metaphosphate, saccharin sodium, sodium metabisulfite, sodium benzoate, sodium citrate, sorbitol solution, and tragacanth.

Pharmacokinetics of Sumycin

The medicine is not fully absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract when taken orally. The maximum concentration of the medicine in plasma is achieved after from two to four hours after the oral intake. Sumycin is mostly concentrated in bile, but excreted with urine and feces. The quality of urinal excretion highly depends on the kidney function as the excretion with urine requires proper glomerular filtration.
